Quiet country roads, sheer sea cliffs, historic village squares and year-round Mediterranean sunshine. A complete runner's guide to routes, terrain, seasons and racing on Malta's sister island.
From the AIMS-certified half marathon to the 2K family loop, all courses start and finish in historic Xagħra Square.
The flagship il-Ġirja t'Għawdex course. Starting in Xagħra Square (140 m), descend through the Marsalforn valley to sea level, follow the shoreline past Qbajjar, turn inland through Għasri and Għarb, pass Wied Sara under Żebbuġ, cross Victoria, and climb back to finish in Xagħra Square.
Loops through the quiet northern country lanes of Xagħra (Triq ta' Bullara, Ġnien Imrik, is-Sruġ, Kortoll), descends towards the base of the Marsalforn valley, skirts Victoria along Triq il-Kapuċċini, and climbs back to finish in Xagħra Square.
An undulating circuit atop the Xagħra high plateau through historic village streets (Pjazza il-Vitorja, Triq il-Knisja) and perimeter farmland lanes (Sruġ, Kortoll, Ġnien Imrik, Ta' Bullara). Ideal for runners and walkers alike.
An accessible, family-friendly circuit through the historic streets of Xagħra starting and finishing in front of the parish church. Open to athletes of all ages, parents with pushchairs, and children.
The golden period for runners. Crisp mornings, wildflowers in bloom, lush green valleys, and pleasant temperatures before summer arrives. Ideal for race weekend in late April.
A favorite winter warm-up destination for northern European runners escaping freezing conditions. Mild temperatures, fresh air, and empty scenic roads.
Warm and dry. Runners should head out early (6:00–7:30 AM) or at sunset to avoid peak heat, take plenty of water, and enjoy a post-run swim in the sea.
Gozo is an island of three hills. Embracing the rolling elevation makes for fantastic strength and endurance training.
Every Gozitan village square (pjazza) has a parish church, water sources, and welcoming cafes for mid-run refreshments.
Standard road running shoes are ideal for 90% of routes. Bring light trail shoes if exploring the cliff edge singletracks.
Gozo's public bus system is inexpensive and punctual. Run one-way across the island and take a short bus ride back to your base.
Every April, over 1,500 runners from 50+ countries gather for Malta's oldest and most scenic road race.
Organised since 1977, il-Ġirja t'Għawdex brings together an AIMS-certified Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, walkathons and kids' races. All courses start and finish in the historic hilltop square of Xagħra.

No. While early youth training runs in the late 1970s explored the steep hills towards Ramla, the modern AIMS-certified half marathon and 10K courses do not descend into Ramla Bay. The half marathon heads northwest from Xagħra down to Marsalforn and Qbajjar, circles inland through Għasri, Għarb, and Victoria, and climbs back up to finish in Xagħra Square.
Yes! Gozo is a fantastic running destination. It has very light vehicular traffic compared to Malta, peaceful rural roads, dramatic coastal cliffs, and clean Mediterranean air. Runners enjoy scenic variety from coastal flats to challenging hilltop climbs.
The route from Marsalforn harbour past Qbajjar Bay and along the salt pans to Xwejni is the flattest scenic route on the island, running right along the sea level with virtually no elevation gain.
The island's flagship annual race is il-Ġirja t'Għawdex (the Gozo Half Marathon), held every April in Xagħra since 1977. It includes an AIMS-certified Half Marathon, 10K race, 5K race, walkathons, and children's races.
Absolutely. Many European athletes visit Gozo for spring training camps or running holidays. The island is compact (14 km wide), English-speaking, offers abundant traditional farmhouses with pools, and connects to Malta via a 25-minute ferry.
Gozo has virtually no stray dogs. Country roads are generally very safe and well-paved, though some narrow lanes lack pavements, so running facing oncoming traffic and wearing bright gear is recommended.
Join us on Sunday, 25 April 2027 for il-Ġirja t'Għawdex or explore the island year-round.
A volunteer race doesn't run on goodwill alone. Huge thanks to the partners, supporters and contributors who make 2027 possible.
